An international perspective on the role of lived experience in creating safer services.

Incorporating the voices of those with lived experience should transform our efforts in violence prevention, including the design and delivery of training.  This plenary panel presentation will explore how such a vision can be realised, drawing on lived experience across several European countries and incorporating participants’ contributions to identify best practice guidelines and areas for improvement.

Practical Safety Strategies Workshop [A] Personal Safety Interventions

Despite an emphasis on prevention, early recognition, and proactive de-escalation, it is acknowledged that on occasion even the most diligent proactive efforts may prove ineffective in ameliorating distress, and personnel may encounter circumstances which impose an imperative to utilize protective safety strategies in the best interests of all concerned. Subsequently, personnel need to be proficient in the safe use of a comprehensive range of safety strategies in order to safely and professionally manage such instances.
Practical Safety Strategies Workshop [A] will focus on and be limited to the exploration of, including the use of disengagement interventions which may be appropriate in circumstances that involve the situationally assessed need to extricate oneself, or others, from an attempted or actual assault, irrespective of intention. These interventions rely upon the understanding of dynamic risk assessment, and the principles of ‘position’ ‘proximity’ and ‘posture’ with emphasis on the proactive use of these principles in their everyday practice.
This workshop will provide a structured environment in which to demonstrate and discuss Personal Safety Interventions exploring comparability with best practice internationally, methods and process of independent expert risk assessment from the perspectives of both the client and personnel, and the professional practice of instructing these techniques to others.
Please understand that while the workshop is open to all participants to attend and engage, practical demonstrations are limited to instructors only as outlined below.
It is important to note that all participants engaging in this workshop understand and agree that:
The enactment of any/all demonstrated personal safety interventions is conducted only by personnel who are currently certified to instruct others in the specific technique demonstrated and explained, and are actively engaged in instructing others in practice.
Demonstrations are structured in a sequence of [Demonstrate – Explain – Discuss].
1] Demonstrate a specific technique with fellow instructors who are familiar with, and competent to perform and instruct others in the demonstrated technique
2] Explain each demonstrated technique with emphasis of the sequence and rationale for the performance of each of it’s constituent components
3] Discuss with each demonstrated technique with fellow participants using a facilitated structure of exploring relevant issues related to education and practice.
4] Understand and agree: that they are demonstrating participants are responsible for any and all risks associated with the performance of the practical demonstration of all techniques, and agree to adhere to the allocated time and structure of the workshop.

Practical Safety Strategies Workshop [B] Containment/protective/restrictive physical interventions

Such safety strategies include personal safety and disengagement strategies which prevent and/or safely manage actual or potential assaults, and containment strategies which rely upon a tiered structure of restrictive physical interventions.
Containment/protective/restrictive physical interventions may be appropriate in circumstances which involve an immediate risk of harm. The use and level of containment employed is always primarily focused on preserving the safety of all concerned, and based upon the professional assessment of the client’s immediate needs and best interests, and the situational assessment of imminent risk.
This workshop will provide a structured environment in which to demonstrate and discuss restrictive containment/ protective/restrictive physical interventions exploring comparability with best practice internationally, methods and process of independent expert risk assessment from the perspectives of both the client and personnel, and professional practice of instructing others.
Please understand that while the workshop is open to all participants to attend and engage, practical demonstrations are limited to instructors only as outlined below.
